Three website platforms compared on a chalkboard — NexysWeb vs Wix vs WordPress for South African businesses

NexysWeb vs Wix vs Custom WordPress: An Honest Comparison for SA Small Businesses

June 15, 2026

We get this question on every sales call. Here's the honest comparison — including when Wix is actually the right answer.

This isn't a hit piece on Wix. Wix has built one of the most accessible website builders in the world. But "accessible" and "best fit for a lead-generation focused South African service business" are different things. Here's how the three options stack up.

The comparison at a glance

Factor Wix / Squarespace Custom WordPress NexysWeb
Once-off cost R0–R5,000 (DIY) R15,000–R80,000 R3,500–R20,000+
Monthly cost R200–R600 R300–R2,000 (hosting + maintenance) R299–R1,200
Mobile load speed 5–7s on ZA 4G Depends — 2–6s <2s (Cloudflare ZA edge)
SA support hours Chat in US hours Depends on freelancer SAST business hours
Phone/CRM integration Manual or Zapier-only Custom-built (R-rand-per-hour) Built-in (Nexys stack)
POPIA compliance DIY Depends Built-in
Time to launch DIY: weekends, weeks, months 6–12 weeks 14 days (guaranteed)

When Wix or Squarespace is actually the right answer

Yes, sometimes it is. Pick Wix or Squarespace if:

  • Your once-off budget is under R3,500
  • You need a single page, not a business engine
  • You're the founder and willing to spend 20-40 hours building it yourself
  • You don't care about phone/CRM integration
  • You don't have a NexysCloud PBX or comparable phone system
  • You're testing an idea, not running an established business

For a side project or pre-revenue startup, Wix is fine. We won't try to sell you NexysWeb for that — we'll tell you Wix.

When custom WordPress is the right answer

Pick custom WordPress (built by a developer) if:

  • You need a multi-author blog with 50+ contributors
  • You're running e-commerce with 100+ products (WooCommerce is more flexible than GHL's store)
  • You have specific plugin requirements (LMS, membership site, complex booking)
  • You have budget for ongoing developer maintenance (R15k+/year baseline)
  • Speed-to-launch is not a priority

WordPress is powerful and flexible. But it's also a maintenance burden — plugin conflicts, security patches, hosting drama. Most ZA SMBs don't need that complexity.

When NexysWeb is the right answer

Pick NexysWeb if:

  • You run a service business (healthcare, trades, professional services, consultancies)
  • Your leads mostly come via phone or form
  • You want a launch in 14 days, not 14 weeks
  • You want the website wired into your CRM and phone system, not bolted on
  • You want SAST business hours support, not a US ticket system
  • POPIA compliance matters and you'd rather not figure it out yourself
  • You want predictable monthly cost (R299–R1,200/month) instead of surprise developer invoices

The TL;DR: Wix wins on DIY price, WordPress wins on flexibility, NexysWeb wins on lead generation for SA service businesses.

The hidden cost everyone ignores: integration

The real comparison isn't site-vs-site. It's system-vs-system.

A Wix site is just a website. You'll then need separately: a CRM (HubSpot? GHL?), a phone system (Skype? a landline?), a booking tool (Calendly?), an SMS gateway, a missed-call recovery service, and the engineering work to glue them all together (usually Zapier, usually fragile).

Add up the monthly cost of those: HubSpot Starter R450, Calendly R200, SMS gateway R150, Zapier Professional R350, basic VoIP R300 — that's R1,450/month before the site itself.

A NexysWeb Standard build with the Nexys stack is R599/month all-in, including:

  • Hosting + SSL + backups + maintenance
  • GHL CRM with workflow automation
  • NexysCloud PBX integration
  • Missed-call recovery
  • 1 hour of content edits per month

Same outcome, less than half the cost, one supplier, one bill.

The decision tree

Q1: Is your once-off budget under R3,500 and you only need one page? → Wix.
Q2: Do you need a complex CMS with 100+ products or 50+ blog contributors? → Custom WordPress.
Q3: Anything else? → NexysWeb.
