What Is VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)?

April 08, 2026•3 min read

VoIP — Voice over Internet Protocol — is technology that lets phone calls travel as digital data over the internet, instead of over traditional copper lines. If you’ve made a call from a laptop, a video meeting app, or a modern business phone system, you’ve used VoIP. It’s the foundation almost all modern voice communication runs on, and it’s how most South African business calls are placed in 2026.

How VoIP works

When you speak into a phone, VoIP converts your voice into small digital packets, sends them over the internet, and reassembles them on the other end. The same technology works in reverse for the incoming side. To the people speaking, it’s identical to any other phone call — they pick up, talk, hang up. Everything else happens invisibly in the background.

VoIP vs cloud PBX

These terms are often confused. VoIP is the underlying technology that carries voice over the internet. A cloud PBX is a full business phone system — extensions, menus, recording, routing — that uses VoIP to make and receive calls. You can have VoIP without a cloud PBX (for example, a personal calling app), but a cloud PBX always uses VoIP underneath. (See What Is Cloud PBX and How Does It Work?.)

Why South African businesses use VoIP

  • Lower call costs. VoIP rates are typically far lower than legacy line rates, especially for calls to mobiles and other provinces.
  • No physical line dependency. With Telkom decommissioning its copper network and ISDN being retired, VoIP is the future-proof choice.
  • Flexible scaling. Add users or capacity in software, not by laying lines.
  • Works from anywhere. Staff can use the business number on a laptop or phone, anywhere with internet.
  • Resilient during load shedding. Hosted off-site, VoIP keeps routing calls when the office loses power.

What you need to use VoIP

  • A reliable internet connection — fibre or a good LTE/5G link.
  • A device — IP phone, laptop with a softphone app, or a smartphone.
  • A licensed VoIP provider (ICASA-licensed in South Africa).

Is VoIP reliable?

On a quality connection with a reputable provider, VoIP call quality matches or exceeds traditional landlines. The two requirements are adequate bandwidth and voice traffic prioritisation. The old worry about “calls breaking up on the internet” largely vanished with the spread of fibre and modern mobile networks.

Is VoIP legal and POPIA-compliant?

Yes — VoIP has been fully legal in South Africa for years. Providers should hold ICASA ECS/ECNS licences, and a reputable provider builds POPIA-aligned handling of call data and recordings into the service. (See POPIA Compliance for VoIP and Cloud PBX.)

Frequently asked questions

Can I make VoIP calls to any normal phone?

Yes — VoIP calls reach any landline or mobile in the world, regardless of whether the other side is using VoIP.

Will I keep my existing business number?

Yes. Your number ports onto VoIP so customers reach you exactly as before. (See How to Port Your Business Phone Number.)

Do I need a special phone for VoIP?

No. A laptop or smartphone with the right app works perfectly. IP desk phones are optional.

What happens to VoIP during load shedding?

Because the service runs in the cloud, it keeps going. Calls reroute to mobiles or other locations automatically, and missed call recovery catches anything still missed.
