Why Your Wix Site Isn't Ringing the Phone (and 5 Fixes That Actually Work in 2026)
You can have 5,000 monthly visitors and zero calls. We've audited 47 South African SMB websites this year — Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy builder, old WordPress, custom builds — and the same five conversion leaks show up in 80% of them.
Here's the diagnosis. And the fix.
The "I have a website, where are my leads?" problem
For most South African service businesses, the website was built once, three years ago, by someone who's no longer answering emails. It looks fine on a laptop. The owner can't remember the password. Google Analytics shows traffic.
And the phone doesn't ring.
This isn't because Wix is bad. It's because almost nobody builds a website to generate calls — they build it to look professional. Those are two different products.
Leak #1 — Your hero section doesn't say what you do
Open your homepage on a phone. Without scrolling, can a stranger tell:
- What you actually sell?
- Who it's for?
- How they can buy it right now?
If any of those three answers is "they'd have to scroll" — you're losing 30-40% of visitors before they even start. Mobile attention spans on landing pages are under 4 seconds. Your hero either earns the next scroll or it doesn't.
Fix: One headline that names your offer and your customer. One subhead that explains the outcome. One button that says exactly what happens next. Everything else can wait.
Leak #2 — Your phone number is hidden
This is the most common one and the easiest to fix.
SMBs in South Africa get 60-80% of their leads via phone. Yet most websites bury the phone number in the footer, or in a "Contact" page that requires two clicks. Some have no phone number at all — just a contact form that goes to an inbox nobody checks.
Fix: Phone number top-right of every page, click-to-call enabled, repeated in the hero, repeated in every footer. If you have a NexysCloud PBX, make sure every page tracks the call source so you know which page drove the conversation.
Leak #3 — Your form has 11 fields
Every form field you add cuts conversion by roughly 4-7%. We tested this on a Gauteng financial advisory firm: the 12-field "professional" form generated 23 submits in 30 days. The 6-field version on the same traffic generated 96. That's a 4.2× improvement from deleting six questions.
Fix: Cut your form to 5 fields maximum. Name, mobile, email, business, "what do you need" dropdown. Anything else, ask on the call.
Leak #4 — Your site loads in 6 seconds on 4G
Google's data is clear: every second of load time over 3 seconds drops mobile conversion by 12%. At 5 seconds, you've lost 38% of visitors. At 7 seconds, 53%.
South African 4G isn't fast. Average mobile loads in Gauteng on Wix/Squarespace sites are 5.5-7.2 seconds. Most of that is unoptimised images and third-party scripts.
Fix: Run your site through PageSpeed Insights. If your mobile LCP is over 2.5s, your site is bleeding leads. The fix is usually image compression + edge caching (Cloudflare's South African PoP solves both for free).
Leak #5 — There's no follow-up
Even when forms get submitted, here's what usually happens:
- Lead submits at 9:47 PM on a Sunday
- Email lands in [email protected]
- Nobody checks that inbox until Tuesday morning
- By then, the lead has gone to two competitors
- You never see the conversion
Research from Lead Response Management shows that leads contacted within 5 minutes are 21× more likely to convert than leads contacted after 30 minutes. After 24 hours, the conversion rate drops by 80%.
Fix: Auto-SMS the lead within 60 seconds with a booking link. Auto-email confirmation. Auto-create the CRM record. Auto-assign to a rep. If you're on the Nexys stack, this happens by default — every form submit triggers the workflow.
Diagnose your own site in 8 minutes
Open your homepage on a phone and run this checklist:
- ☐ Hero clearly states what you sell, to whom, and the next step
- ☐ Phone number is visible without scrolling on mobile
- ☐ Phone number is click-to-call
- ☐ Any form has 5 fields or fewer
- ☐ Mobile load time under 3 seconds (test on PageSpeed Insights)
- ☐ Form submissions trigger an automatic SMS or email within 60 seconds
- ☐ Form submissions land in a CRM, not just an inbox
- ☐ You can see this month's leads without asking your web guy
Less than 6 ticks? You're losing leads. Less than 4 ticks? You're losing most of them.
When to rebuild vs tune
If your site checks 3 boxes or fewer, rebuilding is usually faster than fixing. We audit roughly 50% of clients into "tune the existing site" and 50% into "start over" — it's not a sales push, it's a maths question. If you'd spend more on plugin-by-plugin patches than on a clean build, the clean build wins.
A NexysWeb Standard build is R7,500 once-off + R599/month. That covers design, build, hosting, SSL, daily backups, 1 hour of content edits per month, and integration into the Nexys stack (phone, AI receptionist, missed-call recovery, CRM).
