VoIP & Business Telephony FAQs for SA Businesses
VoIP has become the default way South African businesses make and take phone calls — but the basics still trip people up. This is a no-nonsense FAQ covering the questions we hear most about VoIP, SIP trunking and business telephony in the SA context, including the regulatory and infrastructure changes that affect every business in 2026.
VoIP basics
What is VoIP?
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is technology that lets phone calls travel as digital data over the internet instead of over traditional copper lines. (See What Is VoIP?.)
Is VoIP the same as cloud PBX?
No. VoIP is the underlying call-carrying technology. A cloud PBX is the full phone system — menus, extensions, recording, routing — that uses VoIP to send and receive calls.
Do I need special phones for VoIP?
No. Desktop and mobile apps turn computers and smartphones into business extensions. IP desk phones are optional.
Quality and reliability
Is VoIP call quality as good as a landline?
On a decent internet connection with a quality provider and voice prioritisation, yes — often clearer than a traditional line. Most quality problems come down to weak internet or low-cost wholesale routing, both of which a good provider avoids.
What internet speed do I need?
Each concurrent call uses a small amount of bandwidth — typically under 100 kbps. For a small business, modest fibre or LTE handles many simultaneous calls comfortably. A line check before sign-up confirms it.
What happens to VoIP during load shedding?
Because the service runs in the cloud, it keeps going — calls reroute to staff mobiles or another location, and missed call recovery catches anything that can’t be answered. (See How Cloud PBX Keeps Your Business Running During Load Shedding.)
Cost
How much does VoIP cost?
Pricing combines a per-user monthly fee (typically R45–R250 in SA, most landing R65–R150) with call rates around 24–30c/min to landlines and ~79c/min to mobiles, often bundled. Setup is usually free. (See VoIP Call Rates in South Africa 2026.)
Will VoIP really save my business money?
For most businesses moving off legacy Telkom lines, yes — both line rental and call charges drop, often noticeably. The savings are bigger if your business calls mobiles and other regions frequently.
Are calls between my own staff free?
Yes — internal extension-to-extension calls are free regardless of location.
SIP trunking
What is SIP trunking?
SIP trunking is the modern, internet-based replacement for ISDN and analogue phone lines, connecting your phone system to the public phone network. (See SIP Trunking Explained.)
Do I need a new PBX to use SIP?
Not necessarily. A SIP-compatible on-site PBX can use a SIP trunk; or move to a cloud PBX that includes SIP connectivity.
What’s happening to ISDN in South Africa?
ISDN is being retired as Telkom decommissions its copper network. SIP trunking is the natural replacement. (See SIP Trunking vs ISDN in South Africa.)
Regulation and licensing
Do VoIP providers need a licence in SA?
Yes — legitimate providers hold ICASA licences (ECS and, for number allocation, ECNS). Working with a licensed provider protects your number ownership and your rights as a customer.
Is VoIP legal in South Africa?
Completely. VoIP has been fully legal for businesses and consumers in SA for years.
Is VoIP POPIA-compliant?
The technology itself can be — a reputable provider handles call data, recordings and customer information in line with POPIA. (See POPIA Compliance for VoIP and Cloud PBX.)
Switching providers
Can I keep my business number?
Yes — number porting lets you keep your existing number on the new system. It typically takes 5–10 business days and is usually free.
How long does a switch take?
A standard cloud VoIP deployment can be live within days, with porting being the longest step. Your business stays operating throughout.
What should I look for in a VoIP provider?
ICASA licensing, call quality, local SA support, transparent pricing, flexible contracts, load shedding resilience, included features, free porting and POPIA-aligned data handling. (Full list in How to Choose the Right VoIP Provider.)
